Clean sheets, tidy homes and ‘proper pans’: the everyday things we’re falling in love with

From fresh bedding to a spotless kitchen, it turns out the little things that make a house feel like home are becoming more appealing than ever. And apparently, 34 is the age when we really start to appreciate them.

Our latest research has revealed the everyday things Brits find unexpectedly attractive, with clean bedding topping the list. A freshly made bed comes out on top for 34% of people, followed by a tidy home (29%) and a spotless kitchen (23%).

Other things that make us feel good include a well-stocked fridge (19%), an organised drawer (15%) and a tidy kitchen cupboard (14%). And for those who appreciate the finer details in the kitchen, homemade barista-style coffee (12%), matching storage containers (9%) and a proper set of pans (9%) all make the list, too.

When staying in beats going out

If you’ve found yourself looking forward to a quiet night at home more than a night out, you’re certainly not alone. Almost half of Brits (44%) would rather stay in and cook a nice meal than head out for dinner or drinks, while 41% say staying in feels more exciting than it did five years ago.

For millennials, the appeal of home is particularly strong. A third (34%) say they get most excited about cooking a nice meal at home using their favourite kitchen products, rather than eating at a restaurant or ordering a takeaway.

And it’s not just the end result that brings satisfaction. Among millennials, home-making rituals like getting rid of clutter (42%), changing the bedding (36%) and cooking a meal from scratch (29%) are among the everyday household jobs that bring the greatest sense of achievement.

Making more of the place we call home

Our growing love of home is reflected in how much we spend on it. Those aged 25 to 34 spend an average of £68.81 a month on homeware and products for the home, compared with £59.84 among 18 to 24-year-olds, £14.26 among the over-65s and £39.60 across all Brits.

And it’s easy to see why. The right kitchen tools can make cooking from scratch more enjoyable, clever appliances can take the effort out of everyday jobs, and practical storage can help make a busy home feel that little bit more organised.
