Each of our hand forged chef knives are made from a tempered martensitic stainless steel that’s durable and will hold a razor-sharp edge. As their name suggests, each knife is fully forged from a single piece of hardened steel, meaning the blades are strong, free from impurities and can be depended upon to cut day-after-day and year-after-year.
What is a fully forged knife?
There are two main types of knife: fully forged and stamped knives.
Stamped knives are made by pressing (stamping) a knife-shaped template into a flat sheet of steel, like cutting cookies out of a sheet of dough with a cookie cutter. Stamping allows knives to be made quickly and to a consistent shape.
A forged knife is instead made from a rod of steel that’s heated and then hammered into shape in a forge. Think glowing hot steel being repeatedly struck with a hammer to beat it slowly and surely into shape.
Are forged knives better?
When it comes to forged knives vs. stamped knives, forged blades are usually made to a higher level of quality than stamped blades. A forged knife will be made from a single piece of steel, and will usually be harder and more rigid with fewer impurities. This makes forged knives sharper, easier to sharpen, more durable and longer lasting.
What is a full tang knife?
As well as being forged, our Lakeland Fully Forged Knives are full tang knives. This means the metal end of the knife’s blade extends all the way through the handle, right to the base of it. This makes for even stronger knives, but also helps to make them perfectly balanced too.
