Do I need a dehumidifier for my house?

If you have excess moisture in your home, you need a dehumidifier.

Moisture in the air can cause damage to your home and can harm your health. If you regularly notice condensation on your windows or walls, or patches of mould or mildew, the air in your house is too damp and you should invest in a home dehumidifier.

How does moisture damage my home?

Excess moisture in the air will collect on surfaces. This can damage wood and stain it at first, but over time the wood can start to rot. Moisture can also soak into wallpaper, fabrics and other porous surfaces, damaging them and promoting mould and mildew to grow.

Damp can also harm electric items, potentially resulting in some pretty costly damage if it affects TVs, games consoles and computers.

Can damp harm my health?

Yes. Too much moisture and mould in your home can be harmful if you have breathing problems, asthma or allergies.

Moisture and mould can also harm the immune system, particularly in elderly people, babies and children, as well as anyone who already has an immune system condition.

What is the ideal humidity for my home?

Most people find a relative humidity of around 50% is comfortable (50% of the total amount of moisture the air can hold at that temperature). This level of humidity will keep belongings and property safe from damage too.

Where should I place my home dehumidifier?

You should place your dehumidifier in an open area, at least six inches away from any walls.

When you first use your dehumidifier, set it up in the dampest room in your house or flat. When the humidity level has dropped in that room, move the dehumidifier to the next dampest room. Continue until you’ve reached the desired level of humidity throughout your home. Then set your dehumidifier up in a central area with all the surrounding doors open to maintain your desired level of humidity.

Installing a dehumidifier in your home can be a small investment that reaps substantial dividends. The best dehumidifiers can banish damp, mould and mildew, and even unwanted odours. They can also protect your home and health as well as even helping to dry your laundry. By choosing the right dehumidifier from Lakeland you can take control of the humidity in your home.
