Barbecuing can be a messy business, and nobody relishes the thought of scrubbing and scraping burnt-on food from the bars and sides of the grill once all the bangers and burgers have been devoured. Here to take most of the effort out of the job, and keep your grill clean and shiny all year round, is the BBQ Cleaning Kit from Oven Mate – the same people who make our bestselling Oven Mate Gel for your indoor oven.

• BBQ Annual Deep Cleaner, 500ml – enough for 2 deep cleans

Grill talk

Making it easy to get ready for that all-important First Barbecue of the Year, Oven Mate’s kit will leave your grill clean, shiny and ready for action – and keep it that way until it’s time to put it away for the winter.

Get it clean

First time out, use the scraper and a Grill Gremlin sponge – specially designed to fit round the bars of your grill – to loosen any carbon deposits and excess food you didn’t clean off last year (naughty), then (making sure to wear the gloves and sleeve protectors) cover your grill with some of the BBQ Annual Deep Cleaner solution and leave for an hour before rinsing off with hot water. To clean the racks, put them in one of the bags with around half a bottle of solution and turn the sealed bag to coat the racks with the liquid. Leave for a couple of hours (turning occasionally) then rinse with hot water to reveal your gleaming racks.

Please note: for really stubborn stains on your grill and racks, it may be necessary to repeat the process or leave the solution on for longer.

Keep it clean

After every barbie, spray your grill and racks with the BBQ Oven & Grill Cleaner – its tough foaming action cuts through grease and grime – and wipe down with a sponge to keep them clean and looking good for the next time.

And to save you even more time and effort, you can place one of the non-stick reusable grill mats on the bars to stop fat and grease building up in the first place. Not only will the mat stop your food burning, it’s thin enough to ensure your food cooks evenly and still turns it out with those characteristic stripy grill marks. Even better, it can go in the dishwasher for easy cleaning.

Grill mats can be used on charcoal, gas and electric barbecues up to 350°C.
