And if you’ve always wanted to have a go at making your own, but don’t know where to start, Kilner have made it easy for you with their Sourdough Starter Set.
What’s included
Kilner’s set contains everything you need (apart from flour and water) to make a successful sourdough starter, ready to transform into your first sourdough loaf. You can also use the starter to make pizza bases, naan breads, pancakes and more. And because you get two jars, you can make a second batch of starter while the first one is in use.
The specially designed measuring lid means it’s easy to precisely measure the right amounts of flour and water, and step-by step instructions are included to help you along to sourdough success.
Sourdough bread is brilliant for bruschetta, dipping in oil, or just eating simply with butter (toasted sourdough is out of this world), and if by any chance you don’t eat your whole loaf at its best – don’t throw it away, as it will make fantastic breadcrumbs or croutons.

It really does what it say on the label. I can’t fault it as a starter kit for me learning to make sourdough. If I had to make one suggestion to improve the product then it would be to have a couple of pictures showing the sourdough mixture starter. As a complete novice I had no idea what it should be like!! It took several attempts before my starter worked!!

I was very disappointed given Kilner's reputation. I spent a whole week making my starter, guessing which of two contradictory instructions to follow (keep 60g of the previous mix or discard 60g and keep the rest). At the end of the week I had 180g of starter (success?) so I looked at the recipe for sourdough bread only to discover that it needed 300g of starter. If I had nearly doubled the ingredients during the starter stage in order to make 300g it would have overflowed the jar. This kit adds nothing that two ordinary jars, a spatula and two elastic bands can't provide.
