Kilner Sourdough Starter Set

Product number: 32823

With its crisp, crunchy crust and chewy crumb, it’s hard to beat the taste of a slice from a freshly baked sourdough loaf slathered in butter. And if you’ve always wanted to have a go at making your own, but don’t know where to start, Kilner have made it easy for you with their Sourdough Starter Set.

What’s included

  • 2 x 350ml Kilner® wide mouth jars
  • 1 x stainless steel measuring lid
  • 1 x silicone spatula
  • 1 x stainless steel lid
  • 2 x rubber bands
  • 6 x labels
  • 1 x recipe booklet
  • Kilner’s set contains everything you need (apart from flour and water) to make a successful sourdough starter, ready to transform into your first sourdough loaf. You can also use the starter to make pizza bases, naan breads, pancakes and more. And because you get two jars, you can make a second batch of starter while the first one is in use.

The specially designed measuring lid means it’s easy to precisely measure the right amounts of flour and water, and step-by step instructions are included to help you along to sourdough success.

Sourdough bread is brilliant for bruschetta, dipping in oil, or just eating simply with butter (toasted sourdough is out of this world), and if by any chance you don’t eat your whole loaf at its best – don’t throw it away, as it will make fantastic breadcrumbs or croutons.

    Jars are dishwasher safe.

This makes sourdough easy and with no mess.

    "Sourdough Newbie!"

It really does what it say on the label. I can’t fault it as a starter kit for me learning to make sourdough. If I had to make one suggestion to improve the product then it would be to have a couple of pictures showing the sourdough mixture starter. As a complete novice I had no idea what it should be like!! It took several attempts before my starter worked!!

"Nice jars but what confusing instructions"

    star star star_border star_border star_border

My wife bought me this as a birthday present and I was looking forward to making sourdough However the instructions are nonsensical. e.g. after day 2 you will have 120g of material and it tells you to discard half and add 60g of flour and 60 g of water, then on day 3 you discard 60g to give you 120g and then feed again, later in the same paragraph it tells you to only keep 60g - which do I do? It seems it is the latter as if you only discard 60g you will soon have too much material. Using this approach you will end up with 180g of active started however the recipe asks for 300g!?

Thank you for your review. We're sorry that the instructions aren't clear and the suppliers are now looking into this further. They've advised: Day 1 60G of flour and water 120G, Day 2 Nothing required, Day 3 You retain 60G of starter and add 60G of flour and water total is 180g. The above process is repeated retaining 60G of starter and adding 60G of flour and water keeping total at 180g until you have an active starter.

    "A waste of money"

I was very disappointed given Kilner's reputation. I spent a whole week making my starter, guessing which of two contradictory instructions to follow (keep 60g of the previous mix or discard 60g and keep the rest). At the end of the week I had 180g of starter (success?) so I looked at the recipe for sourdough bread only to discover that it needed 300g of starter. If I had nearly doubled the ingredients during the starter stage in order to make 300g it would have overflowed the jar. This kit adds nothing that two ordinary jars, a spatula and two elastic bands can't provide.
