The smash burger is an indulgent summer staple, perfect for home BBQs and weekend dinners. But on a hot day, a lighter option is sometimes appreciated. Our healthy take on the classic smash burger is just the thing! Crispy, flavourful and better for you, these patties can be rustled up in no time on your BBQ grill or in your air fryer. Both of the cooking methods in this recipe use less oil than frying, without sacrificing any of the signature crispiness or juiciness that make this summer meal so good.

Ingredients

  • 500g extra lean ground beef
  • small onion finely chopped
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • A dash salt and pepper  to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • whole wheat burger buns
  • A portion low-fat mayonnaise to taste
  • A portion lettuce leaves shredded
  • beef tomato thinly sliced
  • red onion thinly sliced
  • 4 portions avocado or guacamole sliced

Method

  1. Method 1: BBQ

Made using the Cobb Premier Charcoal Barbecue Grill.

  2. Mix the beef mince, finely chopped onion, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper together in a bowl. Divide the mixture into 4 equal balls.
  3. Lightly grease the Lakeland Burger Press before using it to mould each smashed burger patty into shape.
  4. Pop the uncooked burgers onto a plate, cover with clingfilm, and refrigerate for at least an hour to firm up.
  5. Light up your barbecue to a medium high heat and allow it to preheat for about 10 minutes.
  6. Use cooking spray or a brush to lightly coat the patties with olive oil on both sides. Transfer them onto the BBQ grill. Cook for 6-8 minutes on each side. Check the internal temperature has reached 71°C (160°F) using one of our digital meat thermometers.
  7. While the patties are cooking, cut the whole wheat buns in half and add them to the grill for 1-2 minutes, lightly toasting the inside surface.
  8. Spread a small amount of low-fat mayonnaise on the bottom halves of the buns. Add your shredded lettuce, a slice of tomato, and a slice of red onion to each.
  9. Place the smashed burger patties on top of the loaded bun. Add a portion of avocado slices or a dollop of guacamole on each patty, along with any burger sauce, coriander or gherkins that you fancy!
  10. Place the top halves of the buns on the assembled burgers and serve immediately. Enjoy your healthy smash burgers with one of our easy summer drinks for a light and cool meal on a hot day.
