What is a milk pan?
A milk pan is a small saucepans (around 14cm), with tall, straight sides to stop liquids bubbling over and, crucially, a spout or lip. This design makes it the master of heating liquids, custards, and gravies without making a mess of your hob.
Unlike a standard pan, its shape is specifically engineered to handle liquids that love to froth up, giving you more control when bringing milk or sauces to the boil. They also tend to have a longer handle for better leverage, ensuring your hands stay a safe distance from the heat while stirring or pouring.
Milk pan features to consider
- Pouring lip — The defining feature of these pans is the pour. A milk pan with a pouring lip (often double-lipped for left or right-handed cooks) ensures your hot milk goes into the mug, not on the worktop.
- Non-stick — If you love making homemade sauces or melting chocolate for your latest baking creation, a non-stick milk pan is your best friend. It stops sticky ingredients from clinging to the sides, meaning you get every last drop of ganache or gravy. Don't forget to pick up some silicone-coated kitchen utensils to keep your new non-stick surfaces scratch-free and looking their best.
- High sides — These pans are also designed with higher sides than standard saucepans, which is brilliant for stopping liquids that tend to froth up, like milk or certain sauces, from bubbling right over onto your hob.
- Pan material:
- Stainless steel — For those who appreciate professional durability and high heat, a stainless steel milk pan looks smart on the stove and lasts for years.
- Hard anodised aluminium — These are typically made from aluminium that has been treated to create an incredibly tough, durable, and scratch-resistant surface. They offer fantastic, even heat distribution, making them a high-quality choice for controlled cooking.
- Induction-friendly — Most of our pans are fully compatible with modern kitchens, making it simple to find a milk pan for induction hob setups.
