About Bamboo

Technically a grass, bamboo shares many of the properties of wood. Dense, durable and water-resistant, its pale, multi-layered good looks are appearing in more and more homes as furniture, flooring and for kitchen storage. Not just good-looking, bamboo is very hard-wearing, shrugging off stains and cut marks, which makes it ideal for kitchen chopping boards. Fast-growing and unfussy about where it grows, bamboo is the ultimate sustainable wood source, growing to maturity in just three to six years and providing a steady income to its growers – so it’s a great alternative to traditional, slow-growing timbers which can take decades to mature.

Please note: bamboo is 15-20% harder than many hardwoods, so knife blades may need to be sharpened more often than when using traditional hardwood boards.

(The natural antibacterial properties of hardwood cutting surfaces have been proven after extensive testing in American university research labs, notably Dean O. Cliver and his team at the Food Research Institute of Wisconsin-Madison University.) It’s recommended that wooden boards should be stacked on their long sides, especially when drying, so that any residual damp cannot ‘track’ up the grain and cause expansion which may eventually encourage the board to split.
