Responsibly sourced from salt reserves in the Salt Range mountains of Pakistan, each chunky Salthouse Himalayan Rock Salt Cooking Block is unique, deriving its subtle variation in flavour and pinkish colour from the particular blend of minerals present in the salt seam it was carefully mined from.

How it Works

Long-lasting and naturally resilient to extremes of temperature, a Himalayan salt block only has to be held in your hands for you to appreciate just how heavy it is, and it’s this mass – combined with salt’s heat retention properties and the fact that it reacts differently depending on the moisture, fat, sugar, starch and protein content of different foods – that make it the perfect kitchen essential for imparting just the right amount of flavour to whatever is being cooked or cooled on or under it.

How to Use

There’s no end to the ways you can use it: from curing meat or fish to searing scallops or making salted caramel ice cream, the possibilities are endless and, because it lasts so long, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to experiment. Its low porosity means it doesn’t hold on to flavours so you can switch between sweet or savoury foods without compromising their taste – just a simple wipe of its surface once it’s back to room temperature and it’s ready to use again.

"Lovely gift"

Comes in a lovely box and the salt block itself is beautiful to look at. Comes with a booklet with cooking suggestions although I bought 2 for presents for different people and the booklet does suggest (in a couple of recipes) cooking with 2 salt blocks which I think would be a bit pricey and indulgent! That said the recipes are varied - from freezing chocolate on it to scallops or chicken. As a well priced gift its great and both recipients really loved it although I'm yet to hear if they have used it! If its good I may treat myself - something a bit unusual for foodie lovers

We owed the full instructions re curing. 15 min low 15 min med 15 min high. Its reached 240 and heat turned out Started searing the meat and the bottom of it blew out... Disappointed as we got this one because we'd heard about cheaper ones blowing.... Not sure if it'll be used again so bit of a waste of money

We're very sorry to hear this, and will be in touch shortly. We do recommend that that the blocks are tempered on first use. This is the slow heating in 15-20 mins increments, to ensure that the block doesn’t shatter. There is a small amount of residual moisture that will try and escape from the block upon first heating, and the slow process of tempering, which may take anywhere between 2 and 4 hours, will ensure the blocks longevity.
