If you’re a fan of cookery shows, you’ll know that most chefs recommend using a ricer instead of a potato masher to get the best results for smooth and silky mashed potato and purées. And now it’s something you can do with ease, even if you don’t have big hands and a strong grip, thanks to the Joseph Joseph Helix Potato Ricer.

How it works

Just pop your cooked potatoes – or vegetables – into the flat-bottomed stainless steel hopper, fit the top half into the helical grooves and press the handles towards each other – then all you need to do is add your favourite seasoning and lashings of butter… Anyone for bangers and mash? Also great for creating home-made baby food.

Joseph Joseph Helix – the science bit

The design team at Joseph Joseph worked out that using a 180° helical twist would mean cooks could utilise their upper body strength, using the naturally strong muscle groups in arms and shoulders rather than relying on having a firm grip. The resulting Helix range of products makes mashing, ricing, juicing and crushing garlic much easier than in conventional lever-press versions.
