Lakeland Unglazed Earthenware Potato Baker

Product number: 71692

One of our favourite pieces in the range, the 2-part Unglazed Earthenware Potato Baker makes a proper old-fashioned tasting baked spud on a gas hob or in the oven.

There’s no need to oil the skin – just pop your potatoes in the base and put the lid on. If you have a gas hob, cook for about 20 minutes then flip the whole thing over and cook for 20 minutes more. The unglazed earthenware wicks away moisture so your jacket potatoes are piping hot and fluffy in the middle with an amazingly crisp exterior. It’ll hold about 4 medium baking potatoes, and it’s also fab for stewed onions, baked aubergines and stuffed peppers too.

For an example of what you can do with this potato baker, we used it in our Baked Potato and Barbecue Beans recipe.

About the Lakeland Earthenware Range

If you’ve never cooked with earthenware, you might just be wondering what’s so special about it, but once you’ve given it a go, you’ll never look back. Used for centuries, clay is a natural alternative to metal, and our earthenware range is cured at a very high temperature making it durable, versatile and safe up to 230°C in your oven. More surprisingly, it’s also safe on gas hobs either with or without a diffuser, and in your fridge or freezer. The thick construction distributes and retains heat incredibly efficiently, so whatever you cook, bake or roast will be cooked beautifully without any pre-heating.

Fantastic Results

The unglazed finish draws moisture away from food for light cakes, pies with crisp edges and golden loaves with a perfect crust, and offers a naturally non-stick surface that’s effective without the need for chemical coatings, so even muffins baked without cases pop out really easily. You won’t need to season before the first use; in fact, the more often you cook with your earthenware, the more the natural seasoning improves the surface of your dishes and the better the non-stick becomes.

Gets Better With Time

Over time, your dishes will build up a unique patina – just like wood and leather – giving each its own character and making them even more attractive. Every meal leaves behind its mark as a reminder of a dish well cooked, gradually helping to make the non-stick finish and easy-clean properties even better, without retaining any oils, odours or flavours.

Built To Last

Reassuringly solid with a satisfying weight and a homely, timeless appeal, they’re a staple in any kitchen and, when treated well, will last a lifetime, cooking wonderfully time and time again. You’re not just buying this potato baker for yourself – each earthenware piece can be passed from one generation to the next where the unique patina will evoke memories of the comforting meals enjoyed together.

Only suitable for gas hobs.

"Lakeland Unglazed earthenware potato baker"

star star star star_border star_border

I am disappointed with it- bakes perfectly, but is heavy and difficult to handle It is difficult to pick up when hot, as the handles simply sit on top of one another . A smaller version of the same appliance with, handles sleeved in silicone and a grip to ensure closure, when handling would be a lot easier to use. It would also be useful if it came with a care and recipe leaflet. Lakeland Customer Service was excellent and are to be commended on their attitude. For flavour and texture of baked potato, I would give this 5*, but for ease of use sadly not.

"No good at all"

Sorry Lakeland but after 20 years of very happy purchases this one was a disaster. The instructions say 40-45 minutes cooking time and after 1 and a half hours my potatoes are nowhere near cooked. It's very heavy too. I am almost tempted to take the potatoes out and just put them in the oven to finish! It's a pity it only works on gas hobs too and not ceramic ones. This was an expensive mistake, I'm just hoping my husband doesn't ask me how much I spent on it.

"Awful"

We purchased this item five days ago. Yesterday it was used for the first time. The instructions were followed explicitly but it took nearly 2 hours to cook three potatoes. It would have been a lot quicker to just bake them in the oven. It was also observed that the potato skins were not crispy as usual. The only crispy bits were those on the bottom of the potatoes that were stuck to the actual baker. This caused a real problem in cleaning it after use. When we bought it the lady in the shop said we could return it if the performance was disappointing. I think we will do that.

"Disappointed"

star star_border star_border star_border star_border

Having brought this product whilst half price I am already regretting it. Tried it for the first time today, and, after giving four medium sized potatoes double the amount of recommended cooking time I have now had to resort to microwaving them so we can eat when everything else is ready. I have never had to complain about any Lakeland product before, so perhaps next time I will read reviews of anything reduced before I buy.
