Strawberry Flavour Gelato Ice Cream Powder Mix 200g

I have just made this and the Vanilla flavoured gelato following the instructions, but as I have a Cuisinart ice cream maker I thought I would try and use the mix in it. Success - I followed the instructions up to placing in the freezer, I instead put the mix in the ice cream maker for 30 minutes and out came some of the nicest gelato I have tasted in a while. I did exactly the same for the Vanilla mix and met with the same success.

The gelato this makes is very tasty. It is easy to make with a electric whisk and the product is of a good consistency. The downside is the use of cochenille which gives it a vivid and artificial pink colour. Without this it would also be suitable for vegetarians but with it it is not. If making alterations in the future this could be removed and would make for a more appetizing looking product.

Unlike other reviewers whom purchased this for themselves, I received as a gift... This was the grand children's idea..As I'm Nanny ingredients and instructions: it's all very simple...whip cream, add milk and contents of packet, in to container and freeze. This DOES NOT contain cochineal, as some others claim... E163 is the colourant, used to make blue, purples and reds related to the natural world of anthocyans. violet colouring, derived from the cell sap of plants, vegetables and flowers. Also, this product has milk products so not possible to be vegetarian or vegan friendly food.

This gelato is reasonably tasty and easy to make. It is a bit more like frozen angel delight though rather than proper Italian gelato, and if you don't eat it within a day or so it starts to go a little rubbery in texture. The colour is very bright too, maybe a bit less colouring could be used as then it would look more natural.

I bought this and the vanilla flavour but have to say, sorry, I was disappointed both by the taste and the texture of both of them, even following the instructions explicitly. The bright pink of the strawberry one is a little off putting also, bit too vivid! They felt like frozen mousse rather than Gelato. If I could give it 1/2 star that would be my score.
