Needing a faster, cheaper and more efficient way to produce his award-winning hand-raised pies, Perthshire-based pie maker Robert Corrigan approached Birmingham-based bakeware company Silverwood with his modern interpretation of Victorian game pie moulds – and this cleverly designed range of tins is the result.
Built to last from silver-anodised aluminium for even heat distribution and easy clean-up, they won’t rust, blister or peel and their shape and construction ensure a lovely, even bake every time. But the unique feature that makes them so perfect for traditional raised pies is the removable ‘walls’, which lift away to uncover the part-cooked pie for all-round egg washing, before returning to the oven for final browning. This means that the sides of your pies, as well as the lids, can have that lovely, shiny golden glaze so characteristic of traditional British savoury pies.
A great way to cook leftovers or cheaper cuts of meat, there’s no end to the fillings you can try in the tasty pastry package of a raised pie: fantastic flavour combinations like chicken and bacon, pork and chorizo, winter vegetables or mixed game. Verity in our Buying Team had never made a pie before, and was really pleased with the results – as were the lucky recipients of her tasty turkey, stuffing and cranberry pie. Inspired by the Victorian tradition of making Boxing Day pies from layers of Christmas leftovers, it was as delicious as it was good-looking; once the beautifully crisp crust had been cut into, it didn’t last long! And there’s no reason to stick with savoury – why not go sweet with traditional British fruit flavours like gooseberry or rhubarb?

This tin looked small and too shallow to hold all of the filling in the recipe supplied but it is deceptive. The pie I made was a substantial size and cut into 10 good sized slices. It is made to the usual high quality of this range, very easy to clean and care for.
I would have given this tin 0 stars if I could. I was making a game pie as a centre piece for a friends birthday party. What a mistake ! With this tin the pastry completely stuck and I had to start all over again which added to the cost as the pie had 7 different meats in it. Not only was the pie tin a huge disappointment but also the response from Sarah from customer services who seemed quite put out that I wanted my money back! I've been shopping at Lakeland for over 20 years both for their good quality products and their excellent customer services. Sadly this time I received neither !
