Space-age insulation
Flectalon was created by physicists at the University of Cardiff – developed as part of the NASA space research programme for astronauts’ clothing. Heat-reflective and thermal, the fabric has multiple layers of thin, aluminised fibres that efficiently reflect infra-red heat and combine this heat reflection with trapped air insulation for optimum insulation. Much prized by mountain rescue and lifeboat crews because it’s brilliantly effective at bringing anyone at risk of hypothermia back to a normal temperature, this washable fabric is also used to make super-lightweight quilts for poorly babies in hospital.

I bought one of these 15 plus years ago (the model without the extra space in the lid) and it has served us well. It is used every summer for transporting cold/frozen food on holiday, been to the beach (washes well!), on picknicks and used for frozen food when the freezer is on the blink.. It's lightweight and squishy and you can pack loads in.
Bought this many years ago kept meat frozen on an 8 hour car journey, also milk was still cold also kept Chinese takeaway piping hot on 2 hour trek. Problem now is we have to buy a new one as daughter “borrowed” it

Have just received my cool bag and although it looks and feels like a quality item (I have yet to try it) I was a little disappointed to note the label states the volume is “Approx 18 litres” as opposed to the 20 litres in the product description. I spent some time debating between 2 products and their relative volume difference. Had I known this is even smaller than I thought, I might have chosen differently.

I have had this bag for a couple of years now, buying it after my lovely cool bag from Lakeland 's earlier range eventually wore out. For us it is disappointing. Ok the insulation and capacity are good. But the soft structure is harder to fill when shopping than a bag which will stand up. The handles may be good for shoulder carrying to a picnic but they do not fit easily on supermarket trolley handles and I am modifying them to be more suitable to our basic use for the bag. A lesser matter is that instead of two zips allowing central fastening there is only one - I see I am running out of cha
