Space-age insulation

Flectalon was created by physicists at the University of Cardiff – developed as part of the NASA space research programme for astronauts’ clothing. Heat-reflective and thermal, the fabric has multiple layers of thin, aluminised fibres that efficiently reflect infra-red heat and combine this heat reflection with trapped air insulation for optimum insulation. Much prized by mountain rescue and lifeboat crews because it’s brilliantly effective at bringing anyone at risk of hypothermia back to a normal temperature, this washable fabric is also used to make super-lightweight quilts for poorly babies in hospital.
