There’s nowt so barrie as a bag full of scran to take yam. Don’t worry, we haven’t gone mad, we’re speaking Cumbrian! Translation: there’s nothing so good as a bag full of food to take home. Here at Lakeland, we’re proud of our Cumbrian heritage – and of the delicious local produce on offer – so we’ve gathered some of our favourite, locally-produced treats and hoyed (thrown) them into our exclusive Counting Sheep in Cumbrian Tote, which features lovely illustrations by local artist Becca Hall, and also teaches you to count to ten in Cumbrian. And you never know when that might come in handy…!
The scran in’t* bag
The strongly made canvas bag with contrasting piping and stout rope handles is full of tasty treats, packed inside a cardboard box to keep them safe until it’s time to indulge.
Our bespoke tote contains:
- Westmorland Farmhouse Chutney (130g) – winner of a 2015 Great Taste Award, this deliciously rich and fruity chutney is packed with apricots, dates and prunes, with notes of ginger and spices, perfect paired with cheese, sandwiches, cold meats, and just the thing to pep up a ploughman’s lunch. Suitable for vegans and gluten-free.
- Cumberland Sauce (120g) – take a redcurrant jelly base, add a splosh of damson wine and a sprinkling of orange zest, mustard and cayenne pepper… and you’ve got a versatile sauce that adds a flavour punch to gravy and casseroles and makes a delicious glaze for gammon too. Suitable for vegans and gluten-free.
- Raspberry & Vanilla Jam (130g) – one of our favourite flavour combinations, it tempers the tartness of raspberries with a sweetly subtle hint of Madagascan vanilla, this 4-ingredient jam – there’s nothing in it but fruit, sugar, vanilla and pectin – is handmade in the Lake District and suitable for vegans.
- After Dinner Mint Fudge (150g) – made in Kendal the traditional way in copper pans, and flavoured with dark Belgian chocolate and oil of peppermint, this is the perfect accompaniment to after-dinner coffee.
- Triple Chocolate Fudge (150g) – enough said!
- Chocolate Salted Caramel Thins (100g) – handcrafted in Hawkshead, the combination of sweet chocolate and tangy little salted caramel balls makes these a truly decadent treat.
- Casa Blend Coffee (60g) – roasted, ground and blended in Kendal, from two Rainforest Alliance Certified, 100% Arabica coffees: one single estate and directly sourced from a Brazilian farm, and the other from El Salvador.

Once you’ve stuffed your dish (face) with the contents, not only will you have a handy, reusable shopping bag, but you can learn some Cumbrian too. Beautifully illustrated by local artist Becca Hall, the smiley Herdwick (the best breed of sheep, ask anyone – well, anyone Cumbrian) flocks on the front teach you how to count to ten – it’s as easy as yan, tyan, tethera!
