Grampa's Weeder
Product number: 50958
Get to the root of the problem. Invented in 1913, Grampa's Weeder is an effective foe against uninvited garden invaders. After falling out of production during WW2 due to a shortage of materials, it was rediscovered in a barn a few years ago, and has been a best-seller ever since. It extracts weeds effortlessly, roots and all, with a step of the foot and a tilt of the handle – no bending, pulling or kneeling!
Ash handle with cast iron head.

This is a very easy tool to use. Normally I'm on my knees digging up my lawn weeds, resulting in muddy knees, sore back and very sore wrists (I have weak wrists). The tools needs no strength from the user and was very effective with the amount of root removed.

I have clay soil, so can use this throughout my flowerbeds. I have a lot of perennial weeds that I have been keeping at bay for years, but have never been able to dig out with their long tap roots. As they are just beginning to appear, I went out this week with my new Grampa's Weeder and started tackling them. It was amazing - once I got the hang of it (and it really is very simple), it was lifting out the weeds and the entire root intact - some of the roots were a foot long. The best thing of all is that it barely disturbs the soil around the weed, protecting the plants I do want.
This is a sturdy, ingenious, well made tool and excellent value for money. I found it didn't pull all the root up but it did come close. I used it most successfully in the lawn where it made less mess than a trowel would have done. In the flower beds the looser soil made the levering action a little less successful but it still worked adequately. It won't win the weeding war on its own but it is another weapon in the battle.
Having recently moved house and inherited a lawn full of dandelions, daisies and other weeds. I found this tool to be excellent in uprooting them. Difficult to use at first but once I got the hang of it I found it easy to uproot the weeds. Like the other reviewer it is not much good on a flower bed with loose soil.
