Gin Shake Muddle Stir Book

Product number: 45933

No longer the considered the drink of choice for grannies, gin has been embraced by a new, younger audience who love and appreciate the care with which the best distilleries select their aromatic botanicals to brew the perfect gin. Dan Jones has written his Gin: Shake, Muddle, Stir to guide us through the complexities of choosing the right gin for the right occasion, what variety of tonic to mix it with if you’re a purist who just wants a good G&T, and guidance on the perfect ‘glass’ to pour a cocktail into – after all, with options as diverse as the new-fangled, but beautiful, gin balloon glasses, tea cups and jam jars – we do need a little help!

Gin was, once upon a time, a cheap spirit blamed for all society’s ills, and not for nothing was it lampooned as “Mothers’ ruin”. But times have changed for the better and, in recent years, gin has become the world’s fastest-growing artisan-created spirit – a delicious, fragrant and sophisticated beverage that is making a well-deserved comeback in our bars, clubs, homes and in every mixologist’s repertoire. Food Fairs positively buzz with exciting new gin ideas in every aisle and Dan knows a cocktail recipe to suit every kind of botanical blend.

Featuring all the staples like the Gin Fizz, Martini and Gimlet, Dan will soon have you dabbling with a Pink Lady, a Negroni (current hipster favourite) or a Rhubarb Sparkler in no time. Recipes include easy three-ingredient-recipes, cold and hot punches, aperitifs, martinis and more. Dan also shares his favourite syrup and sours for ideas that will elevate your cocktail making skills to new levels. With just one spirit, you could soon be making over 60 drinks that will ensure you are the life and soul of any party.

The Basics of Gin

Did you know that the base spirit of a gin can be made from any variety of alcohol? It might have begun from barley, maize or even molasses and the method that turns it from plain old alcohol into gin is the addition of a clever combination of botanicals, usually starting with juniper, but a very closely guarded secret for every gin maker. This what’s known as Compound Gin, and there are complex rules to be observed in the making of a London Dry Gin or the more mellow Distilled Gins – but, as all of us gin drinkers know, each one has its own distinct taste.
