Made using only the highest quality organic ingredients, combined with Bread Matters’ founder Andrew Whitley’s 45 years of baking experience, this humble packet of dried sourdough starter means you can make your own impressive sourdough creations worthy of any artisan bakery.
How it works
The bit that scares most people off when making sourdough from scratch is creating the dough itself, which can take weeks of preparation and doting on your little bundle before it’s ready to bake. Thankfully, Bread Matters have done the hard work for you, so you can fast-forward, baking your first loaf within a day of starting the process.
Housed in a compostable cellophane bag (no waste here), you’ll find 10g of dried sourdough culture, bursting with friendly bacteria. Simply add water and flour, cover and leave for up to 8 hours in a warm place, and you have yourself a sourdough starter that’ll make you loaf after loaf of bready sourdough goodness. After using the amount you need to make your first loaf, store the rest of your starter in the fridge, adding to it (or ‘feeding’ it) when necessary, ready for your future loaves.

How it began
In 1990, Bread Matters’ founder Andrew Whitley returned home from a trip to Russia with some sourdough to make rye breads at his Village Bakery in Melmerby, Cumbria. And we’re so glad he did, as it led to Bread Matters’ fabulous Sourdough Starter – a distant descendant of that very same Russian sourdough culture, so now you can enjoy a taste of Andrew’s wonderful souvenir too.
