This has saved us the guess work and remembering to set a timer. I wouldn't be without one now. The only difference is starting your eggs to boil from cold. I've had mine for a good 5 years and it's still going strong.

The only thing is that it gradually clouds up on the outside over the years with the hard water, so you can't see it anymore. So now after several years I need to buy a new one, but it is years old!
