Ah, the toasted sandwich! If there’s a combination more comforting than crisp, crunchy bread stuffed with hot, melting cheese, we’ve yet to discover it. And we’re most definitely not alone in our love for this most delicious survivor of the 70s…

The fantastic Lékué Microwave Grill has been vanishing off our shelves at lightning speed. At first, we just couldn’t keep up with demand for this brilliant ‘griddle’ that gives a toasted sarnie the respect it deserves – in fact, our shelves were cleared completely! As ever, we’ve got your backs, and while you’ve been patiently waiting for its return, we’ve worked closely with Lékué to get lorry loads of them into stock – hurrah! Toasted sarnies – made in a microwave?

Who doesn’t love a toasted sandwich? Properly toasted, crunchy golden bread; ham, gooey cheese and a dollop of tangy chutney… irresistible. Our Buyers love them so much that they’ve spent a couple of years looking for a microwave grill that would cook them to perfection. So why a microwave grill? Well, as good as electric toasted sandwich makers are, they take up loads of worktop space, can be slow to heat up, are fiddly to clean and – worst of all – can sometimes leak out all that yummy filling. Plus, they’re a bit of a one-trick pony.

Top toasties

In pursuit of toasted sarnie perfection, we tested a good few microwave products that claimed to do the business, but until we got out hands on this one from Lékué, they all fell short of our expectations. After testing, testing and testing again, we’re very excited to say this one really does make incredible toasties (even without any oil or butter!). Think crunchy toast with melted cheese and hot-right-to-the-middle fillings.

Convinced by a crispy crunch

Not convinced yet? When our Buying Team excitedly told us what this grill could do, we were a little dubious at first… but a plateful of properly crunchy toasties instantly had us persuaded! And it’s not just good for the purist’s cheese and ham variety; the plates are held together with silicone bands, so it can even accommodate deep paninis and ciabattas, packed with lots of lovely layered fillings. The silicone band has a shallower ‘notch’ to clip the grill together for preheating, too, so it’ll feel really secure when moving it in or out of the microwave.

Delicious meat, fish and veggies

As satisfying as they are, man cannot live on toasties alone… but versatility is one of the reasons we love this grill. You might not have considered cooking burgers and sausages in your microwave oven, but when you use this grill, they’ll be done to perfection. Unlike other microwave cookers that just heat or steam, leaving food a little pale, this actually browns food and gives it a lined, grilled effect, producing juicy burgers, chicken and salmon portions that look really appetising, and tender veg too.

How do I use it?

Before you start cooking you’ll need to preheat the grill. Pop it into the microwave for three minutes (use this time to prep your food), then carefully place your food on the bottom grill, rest the upper grill on top and secure it in place with the stretchy silicone loops. Cook your food according to the timings in the included booklet and you’re ready to eat! Lékué have designed the removable silicone handles with raised ‘stay-cooler’ ribs to aid heat insulation, but please use oven gloves to lift the grill as does get very hot.

Easy to clean

Made from non-stick coated aluminium and silicone, it’s really easy to clean once you’ve munched your toasted sandwiches. Unlike electric toastie makers that are notoriously fiddly to wash up, you can dunk this grill in a sink of soapy water, or even pop it in the top rack of a dishwasher, and the chunky silicone handles are really easy to pop on and off, too. Please note that we recommend that the grill is cleaned and dried thoroughly after each use.

Wondering how soon you can eat? Here’s a quick guide to timings after preheating the grill for 3 minutes, based on a 900W microwave - timings will vary.

• Toasted cheese and ham sandwich – 3 minutes
• Beef burger – 5 minutes 30 seconds
• Sausages - 5 minutes
• Veggie burger – 5 minutes
• Salmon fillet – 2 minutes
• Chicken breast – 8 minutes
• Asparagus – 5 minutes

Included booklet contains approximate timings and 9 recipes to get you started.

Please note: Lékué recommend that this grill should only be used in microwaves with a 28cm (11”) turntable. Max power 900W.
