Kombucha tea has become increasingly popular over the past few years, which isn’t surprising considering the myriad of health benefits attributed to this delightfully tangy and fizzy drink. You can make this culture-rich drink yourself at home with Kilner’s Kombucha Kit, which includes an attractive 3 litre drinks dispenser jar that will take you from the brewing process right through to serving up your daily fix of Kombucha.
A much cheaper alternative to buying expensive pre-prepared bottles from the supermarket, once you’re set up, it couldn’t be easier to keep yourself stocked up with fermented Kombucha tea, especially with the easy-to-follow instructions provided, which include a delicious recipe to make Orange & Ginger flavoured Kombucha drink.
What is Kombucha tea?
A fair question to ask. Kombucha is a fermented sweetened tea made with a live culture called a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of ‘good’ bacteria and yeast).
What’s in the box?
Kilner’s Kombucha Kit includes all of the equipment you need to get you on your way to producing your very own delicious Kombucha drink:
- Kilner 3 litre drinks dispenser jar with tap – brew and store your Kombucha, ready to pour when you fancy a glass of the fizzy wonder beverage
- Beechwood lid for dispenser jar – will keep your Kombucha fresh in the fridge (only put the lid on when the SCOBY is removed)
- 2 x Kilner glass jars with handles – perfect for serving a cool glass of culture-rich Kombucha
- 3 x 21cm square muslin sheets – essential to cover the jar during the fermentation process
- 2m twine – for securing your muslin squares to the 3 litre Kilner dispenser
Please note – SCOBY not included. You will need to make your own mother SCOBY, or purchase one that’s ready to use (they are readily available from many online outlets).
What is a SCOBY and how do you make one?
A SCOBY may not be very pretty to look at, but it’s the beauty within that counts, and it has that in abundance: a SCOBY is the key ingredient in Kombucha that really makes the magic happen, providing all of the goodness and gut-friendly flora.
It’s surprisingly simple to grow your very own ‘mother’ SCOBY! You will need to buy a bottle of pre-made, raw Kombucha from a supermarket – make sure it’s not flavoured – pour into a glass jar, pop a muslin cloth over the top and fasten with twine (jar, cloth and twine all included in this set). Leave it at room temperature for 2-3 weeks and you’ll have your very own mini SCOBY, ready to make Kombucha tea. The best part is that, with care, a SCOBY can be used time and time again and, over time, it will also grow new, fresh SCOBY that you can gift to friends, or you can use the fresh one yourself and discard the older one.
How to make Kombucha
- Add white sugar and four to six tea bags to boiling, filtered water.
- Remove the tea bags after 15 minutes and leave the liquid to cool to room temperature (if the water is too hot the SCOBY will be destroyed.
- Add the SCOBY to the liquid in the Kilner jar and add 3 tbsp of cider vinegar.
- Secure the muslin cloth to the top of the jar with the provided twine and leave to ferment for 7-14 days. You can sample the tea throughout the process to ensure you reach your desired taste.
- Once you’re happy, remove the SCOBY, replace the muslin with the wooden lid and pop your Kombucha into the fridge, ready to drink. If you want to add some fizz to your Kombucha, leave it in the fridge for a few days before drinking.
Personalise the flavour
You can create many delicious flavours of Kombucha tea to suit your taste, using fresh fruit, herbs and even flowers to flavour, while retaining all of the same health benefits.
Multiple benefits
Kombucha is by no means a new phenomenon; it is thought that it may even date back to 2012 BC in Asia, where it was known as The Tea of Immortality. While it can’t promise immortality, it can certainly lay claim to a whole host of other gut-healthy virtues, which is why it has been a staple drink in many cultures around the world for centuries. Each batch of this wondrous elixir contains organic acids, B vitamins, antioxidants and probiotics, with benefits that are said to include improved immune system, improved digestion and even joint care.
Instructions and recipe included
Each set includes an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to making your Kombucha as well as a delicious recipe for Orange & Ginger Kombucha. The guide also contains detailed instructions on how to care for your SCOBY and how much Kombucha you should drink to reap the benefits, as well as how to continuously brew Kombucha for a non-stop supply.
Please note: it’s important to read the instructions carefully before brewing or consuming Kombucha.
