Like an all-in-one bain marie, a porringer is a traditional type of pan designed especially to avoid such catastrophes by keeping the contents of the top pan away from the direct heat below. Simply add boiling water to the saucepan base, place your ingredients in the round-bottomed insert and sit it on top, cradled safely out of harm’s way.

Not just great for delicate sauces and custards, it is also ideal for whipping up your morning porridge or scrambled eggs. The robust stainless steel body is complemented by a vented glass lid, to let you keep an eye on how your food is progressing. It is also suitable for all hob types, including induction.
