This is a great idea! This silicon ruler extends to a handy 17½ inches, and when done, just bend it and it curls automatically into a neat little coil. Apart from any culinary use, it's very handy indeed to have a longer ruler than the normal 12 inches. I'm so pleased with this I'm ordering another before they run out, to pop in my handbag!
I keep one of these in the kitchen for measuring tins. It takes up so little space and is always to hand. Now it's in the sale I'll get another one or two. Also great when sugarcrafting - ideal on top of cake make sure writing is straight and for marking the side for decoration.
Although this ruler will twist along it's longest axis, it will not curve around a cake, as I'd hoped, without rolling itself into a coil for storing. I'd hoped to be able to use it to wrap around covered cakes and mark out for decorating but the self-coiling feature prevents that. Still, will allow for marking out flat sugarpaste without marking it or having to resort to using an old tape measure or ruler, which has to be an improvement but will have to keep using the string for marking out the circumference of a covered cake. Glad I got it in the sale rather than paying full price.
We've taken another look at this and have successfully measured the circumference of a cake and other circular items. Snap the ruler into straight rigid position with the zero markings to your left. Then wrap the flexi ruler around the cake, straightening it slightly if it folds while it finds a level edge. Measure the join where the ruler marking meets the zero inches or cm's.
