Not for meby Susan

Preserving Thermometer

I use this thermometer for sweet making (fudge, toffee). Unfortunately the temperature markings wore off quite quickly. My last batch of fudge making was done purely by guesswork.

I purchased one of these and over the time I have only used it about half a dozen times, but couldn't understand why things never got to temperature and I ended up throwing things in the bin burnt or with rock hard jam. After the last disaster I checked the temperature with another hand held thermometer and found there to be such a discrepancy in the readings. This thermometer never comes up to temperature. I came on line to buy a replacement thinking it was probably just a fluke, but after reading similar reviews i don't think I will bother! (Would give it zero stars if I could!)

Don't bother with this.by Tamsin

I bought this a while ago and have just used it for the first time to make jam. I stood, like a muppet, looking at the temperature gauge waiting for it to reach the magic mark but to no avail. Fortunately I've made jam before and knew it didn't take the same amount of time as painting the Forth Road Bridge. Had I waited for this bit of kit to work I'd still be stirring away, grafted to the floor. I'm very surprised that Lakeland stock it but the majority of their products are excellent.

This thermometer seemed at first to be good value and extremely useful. As with earlier reviews, however, by the third time I used it, and washed it according to instructions, all the print started rubbing off. This makes it completely useless: it should not be sold.

A little dissappointedby Tanya Hutchings

Well, I bought the product anyway, despite some of the negative reviews. It worked perfectly the first two times I used it. Then, after the second use, I went to wash it, for the second time, in hot soapy water, and the writing completely came off. I was very gentle, having read the reviews and it still came off. I've since bought a new digital thermospatula, which works beautifully. Little disappointed.

Used once and the numbers have started disappearing. If I used it for the second time I would think I would loose the numbers all together. Can't read them very well now so after one use it's no good. Bit expensive for a 'disposable' thermometer !

I have had this thermometer a couple of years at least. Have only used it a handful of times. Thought it was just me but i kept burning my fudge yet the thermometer said correct temperature not reached. I came back to Lakeland to see if there was an alternative thermometer, read the reviews and realised that I am not alone with the problem. Also the numbers have indeed rubbed off too so all in all is a useless tool.

I bought this thermometer a couple of years ago for when I make jam, so I've only used it two or three times. Like other reviewers I noticed that it never quite reached the jam setting point, but I can live with that as long as I know. But what is very disappointing is that even with the lightest of touches, once wet the gauge numbers rub off, so this year, after making 50 jars of plum jam, from the jam temp downwards I have no numbers at all! I will need to buy a new one (different make) for next year, which is a shame as I like the design of this one.

thought it was my error....by Susan

Last year I started jam/marmalade/preserve making & bought this thermometer. I thought I was doing something wrong, my cooker was faulty or my jam pan inadequate but after reading the many reviews here I realise it is a common fault for the thermometer never to reach the appropriate temperature. So close and yet so far, I wait and wait for that last few degrees to be reached but it never happens & on many occassions I too have ended up with thick, gooey, ruined jams & jellies. Never had to complain about a Lakeland product before, so disappointed.

This was a great product - bought it last year but on using it this year for the first batch of jam making I noticed that the figures are rubbing off when washing it before use. It is stored in bubblewrap between uses - quite disappointed as bought this one as hoped it would last a couple of years at least.

I used this thermometer twice before it smashed when I was carefully washing it (having taken heed of previous reviews). Its a great shame as the thermometer was a good size and had useful indicators. Despite being extremely careful it has bitten the dust so I'm afraid I would have to agree with previous reviewers who have recommended not buying this product.

It worked fine but wasn't as hardy as an older one we had. I was horrified after marmalade making to find the bulb missing but relieved when I cleared out a drawer and found it there! Buying a replacement today! Edit 4/12/11: Oops! Forgot to add this to the order I've just put in. Will just have to wait until I've another £50 worth of stuff needed!!

I have been quite surprised to read all the reviews! I bought one of these YEARS ago with great excitement and each year have faithfully used it. This year I was convinced by my husband to give up and chuck it! (I have!) It has never worked for me - never got above 100c! So for my future jam making I am going it alone with cold saucers!

Excellent thermometer for jam makingby Gina

Preserving Thermometer

I was a little unsure of ordering this product due to the mixed reviews. However it was perfect for the job. Very easy to see the wide red temperature line and know when the setting point was reached. I followed another reviewer's recommendation to pop it straight into boiling water after use and the sticky jam was a doddle to clean off. All in all I would highly recommend.

I came on the website today to look for a new thermometer, I bought this one from you a year or so ago and it was useless, as others have already written the temperatures were not correct, I tried to use it for jams and toffee but all batches were ruined, as I don't live near enough to a store to return it I threw it away. I was hoping you had changed the design or manufacturer as it is treacle toffee time and a good thermometer would make life easier, as it is I will have to resort to the old fashioned methods or try to buy elsewhere.

Most Expensive Jam Everby Kathryn

I have to agree with Jessica, I bought this to take the guess work out of jam making but found that by the time the thermometer reaches temperature, the jam was stiff and sticky- complete waste of money!

Faulty readings?by Ann

Preserving Thermometer

I am new to jam and jelly making and in the hope of ensuring I ascertained the correct setting temperature for my first attempt at jelly making I recently bought one of these thermometers from Lakeland. Though I had no problem reading the thermometer I did find that all 7 attempts to make one intended batch of jelly resulted in a sticky soft toffee like substance that was full of hundreds of bubbles! After much distress and the expense of wasted fruit and preserving sugar I resorted to using the spoon flake and cold saucer test . Guess what, the jelly was perfect. I discovered that the thermometer read 96 degrees when placed in rapidly boiling water so suspect it's readings must be way out for making jam!

Worst batch everby Jessica

Preserving Thermometer

Just bought this to take the guesswork out of preserving and sweet-making. Wish I hadn't bothered. It's the most rubbery, over-cooked batch I've ever made, and even then the thermometer was still reading way below the "jam" indicator. I'll be back to the wrinkle test for the next batch.
