If your soleplate requires some attention... you'd better strike while the iron's hot! This marvellous cream from America removes residue, which can reduce the efficiency of your iron and transfer marks.
A lot of iron cleaners have passed through our hands over the years but this is the only one that we would recommend.

I make stitched textiles and use the iron a lot for bonding fabrics with fusible webbing. It is easy to catch the edge of this or of fine man-made fabrics with the iron and they make a sticky mess. I always have some Hot Iron Cleaner and a towel to hand, because a quick rub of the soleplate with this melts the goo like magic, and I no longer have to worry about fusing the iron to clean garments. Incidentally, I use Baking Parchment Sheets as a protective covering whilst bonding fine fabrics.
