“I love these
”
by Mrs Marlow
I'm surprised to see any bad reviews for these Ecoballs. I LOVE them. I think our washing smells fresh - like it has been dried outdoors, even when it hasn't, and I don't have any more of a problem with stains than I had with non-bio detergents which I have always used. I will be ordering more of these in case Lakeland stop selling the refills - I am really disappointed to see the balls are being discontinued. Not that I am anywhere near to needing refills at the moment. The balls have been in use for months and are still going strong.

“Ecoballs
”
by Susan
Iv'e just brought 2 lots of the ecoballs and got 2 refill packs. I was so excited about getting the washing from the machine to see how good they were. Unfortunately the washing was as dirty as when i put it in, i had to put it back on with my usual detergent in it. Anybody want lots of ecoballs?

“I really tried
”
by carolyn
I am sorry to say after reading all the reviews and thinking they'd be great, save the planet, no chemicals, no irritation to my skin and save me money I was really disappointed. I kept trying and thought I'd get used to no nice smell but no I can't bear it. I thought the clothes were harder to iron and after thinking my clothes smelt stale and doing the cleaner machine with vinegar thing, I still didn't feel they were clean. I have now bought my usual washing powder and softener and feel great, I love all the Lakeland stuff I have bought over the years and am sorry to report this product.

“not sure if they work that well
”
by Mireille
I was keen to try these out, but I'm not sure how effective they are: I think that the cleaning action they have is achieved by the friction of the motion of the balls in the drum, rather than by the balls themselves. They work ok if the wash is not particularly dirty, but when I do have a dirty wash ( I have three boys who are keen all-weather footballers), they have a minimal impact and on occasion I have had to do the wash again with a powder. Nice idea but not suitable for heavy-duty washes.

“Ecoballs
”
by Judith
Following a recommendation, I bought my ecoballs about 2 years ago. I have been very happy with them, also they have not yet needed refilling. Yes, there are some stains that need a little more attention but that happened when I was using conventional powder too. Try pre-soaking with one of the oxy-action powders. Also whites don't appear to be as bright because conventional powders contain optical brighteners, which are not necessarily washing cleaner but are just an optical illusion! I would happily recommend ecoballs to anyone who wants a good result and wants to save money.

“Long lasting and less rinsing
”
by Eleanor
I've lost count of the number of washes - it is well over 150.....I can probably double or treble that figure. Problems with dermatitis have been less since I started using the balls. As I no longer use washing powders I can cut down on the number of rinses which saves time and also water usage. I use the stain remover on collars and bad stains. Occasionally I resort to another well known stain remover. I've been happy with the cleanliness of the wash - (40 for synthetics and 60 for cottons and towels). As I never use fabric conditioner in the final rinse, I don't bother to take out the balls.

“not impressed
”
by Mrs PHILLIPS
These seem OK for towels and sheets but anything stained does not wash successfully and requires another wash which defeats the object. A screw has also come out from one of the ecoballs.

“Very good, especially with colours
”
by Deborah
I have been using these for about 14 months now and I think they're great. They make the water go soapy when it's warm but become inactive in the cold water of the rinse cycle (I'm a bit dubious about their proud claim that there is no residue as the pellets do get smaller with use, so I don't cut out the rinse cycle as they suggest). I think they are especially good on colours - I love bright jewel-coloured blouses and these ecoballs bring them up brighter than they've ever been. I think it's because normal detergent leaves a grey residue that builds up, which these balls strip away. True, they're not quite so good on whites but normal detergents only achieve "luminous whites" with brightening agents anyway so just use a bit of oxygen bleach if you're bothered about this. Ecoballs have only 2.5 drawbacks that I have found - 1) They can't be used in very hot or very cold washes (which you do need to do from time to time), 2) They can only be used with a (nearly) full load as they don't work in reduced water cycles (NB you can't stuff the machine completely full but it was never a good idea to do this anyway, if you wanted your washing to rinse effectively!) And the half - They are a bit awkward to refill. As you only need to do this every 12-18 months it's not a major problem but it also means you won't get much practice (!!) The easiest way I have found is to hold the two halves together but pulled a bit apart at one side and feed the pellets in with a spoon, Also the foam rings are a bit difficult to remove and put back (they fit around a flange to hold them on) - a bit easier when the foam is wet. All in all, I recommend giving them a try.

“Not as good as similar products
”
by Mrs Wade
I have used similar products before and found them excellent I opted for Ecoballs this time as I have used the stain remover before and found it excellent (Especially on tea towels that have been used for bibs) but I find having to remove the balls from the machine in order to add a softener (which I use to give the washing a scent rather than for softening) a bit of a nightmare especially if I have washed duvets and pillow cases, other similar products don't have this requirement.

“An absolutely brilliant product!
”
by Lynn Dudley-Taylor
I live abroad in a country where non-bio products are non existent and anything else is ridiculously expensive. I also try to live as 'green' a life as I can, so was really drawn to this product when saw it in a catalogue. Last summer when back in the UK, I was in Lakeland and decided to give the Ecoballs a go. Quite frankly it has been the best money I have ever spent on a laundry product. Not only do they seem to be lasting FOREVER (I have only topped the pellets up once...and I have two small boys to wash for), they handle the job of washing workshirts, P.E kits and bedding with ease. I would agree with another reviewer that every now and then you may need to treat your whites with a brightening agent and that you should only fill your machine to about 85-90% capacity or their effectivness is lost, but this is a very small price to pay for the money saved with this product. Another big plus is the size of everything. There is no wasteful packing materials and the costs to the envirioment are minimal compared to standard powders/liquids. I would urge any doubters to give the Ecoballs a go, they won't be dissapointed!

“Excellent and Feel Good
”
by Emma
I think these little things are great. I was a bit sceptical I have to admit but I've been very pleased. For those saying their wash smells weird I would maybe suggest their machines need a good going over with the white vinegar on a hot wash suggested in the instructions or perhaps they need to put less in the machine to allow the clothes to move around more? It is strange not having the detergent smell at first as we've all been programmed to connect clean washing with a smell of artificial agents I guess. I was quite happy with my whites too but if they went grey over time I would be tempted to refresh them with a whitening product which would still be less expensive on the pocket and the environment in the long term. Stay open minded folks! It's worth trying to make up your own mind I'd say. It makes me feel much happier to know I'm using something that's kinder to the environment. And in this day and age I'm sure we can all do with saving some money too. I'm sticking with my balls!

“Very pleased
”
by Bron
I have been using these for about 8 weeks now - approximately 45 loads - and have no complaints or problems. The pellets have not noticeably reduced in size during that time - the balls are still full. I have a "top loader" machine (not the "front loader" type seen in Europe and UK) and decided to remove the foam "saturn rings" so the balls would sink into the water better (the foam made them float on top of the water and half the beads were not submerged). This works better for that type of machine. Was very impressed when engine sump oil was completely removed from jeans by spraying them with the usual stain remover and then washing normally in the machine with ecoballs - came out absolutely perfectly clean. Laundry is primarily cleaned by AGITATION - not by product. There just needs to be a tiny bit of "slip" created in the water to release the soiling's "grip" on the fabric and after that its the agitation that does the work. These beads do provide that little bit of "slip" - Ecoballs does the job just as well as anything else I have ever used. The clothes smell nice and fresh too. I've never used any laundry detergent where the clothes didn't smell if left in a closed machine, so not concerned about that. Comes with a very nice feeling about not adding to The Earth's problems, as well! Wholeheartedly recommended !

“very good - not magic
”
by Margaret
I have found these balls to be as good as anything else - If there is a bad stain you have to treat it before washing. We have saved a lot of money without ending up with smelly washing, but you have to hang the clothes up straight away, there are no chemicals to get rid of the 'damp clothes left to fester' smell! We won't be going back to the artificial smelling products at ten times the price!

“Cheesy!
”
by Jane
This product sounded promising, but when I read the poorly worded and sometimes non-sensical explanatory notes I began to wonder if it was worth the money after all. Unfortunately it did not live up to its claims, with clothes coming out smelling musty and, in the case of towels and certain synthetic sports wear fabrics, decidedly cheesy. I tried removing the balls (what a palaver) and giving the laundry a rinse, but it still ended up smelling worse than when it went in, even after drying outside on the line. But thanks for the no-quibble refund.

“Er ... nope
”
by Lynne
I read all the reviews before purchasing the Ecoballs. The majority were fairly negative, but thought I would give them a go. I'm not overly impressed. I was hoping to do away with my normal washing liquid, but this has proved not to be possible. They may be ok for washing dark items that aren't physically dirty, but for anything with a stain on or for towels (even drying clean hands leave marks) I wasn't impressed. I miss the smell of my washing powder (unable to dry outdoors) and so it's a lot of faff and hassle to stop the machine, wait for it to empty so I can remove the balls to put fabric conditioner through the final rinse - I know you're not supposed to have to do the final rinse, but I've adapted the routine. Having said that, the stain remover was effective - but you have to wait 10 minutes for it to soak into the fabric before putting on your wash. The end of the tube would benefit from some sort of nozzle so that it doesn't splodge (technical term) all over the place, as it's not very precise. The Ecoballs like a fabulous idea, but in practice, not impressed. I shall be taking advantage of Lakeland's super refund policy in the very near future.

“Brilliant for some things
”
by Simon
These are brilliant for washing wet suits and waterproof coats because they don't remove the waterproof surface like detergents. They're also good for washing curtains and lightly soiled items. However, they're not good for white towels as they tend to end up a shade of grey! They don't replace my usual detergent, but, for the above mentioned items, they're excellent.

“Ecoballs disappointing
”
by Sally Davies
I had good results for the first wash with these, as quite a few other reviewers found, but then things started to go downhill - a bit smelly, with no impact whatever being made on such things as armpit area. Basically about as effective as washing with plain water with 2 rocks in, I suspect. Admittedly I didn't go for the stain remover tube thingy. Instead, I tried using my usual trusty wash booster as well (hydrogen peroxide type) but then my daughter (about to finish her Masters in Chemistry) pointed out that this was a very bad idea, because, if you follow the instructions on the package and don't rinse, you have all that stuff still in suspension and deposited on your unrinsed clothes. Furthermore, she said, the main ingredient of the Ecoballs, at 51%, is anionic surfactants, and that, folks, is detergent. All over your clothes after you finish washing them, as instructed, without rinsing. If you *do* rinse it would seem (a) ineffective - unless you bother to stop the cycle before rinsing and remove the Ecoballs, the detergent will still be being released into your "rinsing" water, and (b) costly - presumably more lots of water means your Ecoballs erode more quickly than expected, so goodbye "150 washes". I've stopped using them and feel a bit suckered. I hope others have better luck than me, but from reading the other reviews it seems like many don't. Maybe time to reconsider stocking the product, Lakeland?

“Rather disappointed
”
by Helen
Sadly I found these to be rather disappointing. I love just about everything else I have ever bought from Lakeland so was surprised that these did not live up to my expectations. I have given them a fair trial (as did my Mum) and feel that our clothes do not smell fresh and that even minor stains remain. I wish I had spent my money on something different at Lakeland.

“Ecoballs are fab !!
”
by Mrs sally humphries
I got these on a whim really....I was very surprised when they worked !! Towels were soft and fluffy without fabric softener and clothes were clean and smelled lovely. I use a low water washer and they worked just fine for me. Only thing I was not impressed with was my kitchen towels did not get very clean so might have to use my fabric softener for those only. But I highly recommend these for use !!

“Wish I had bought these long ago!
”
by Mrs Goodwin
I have been using both balls in my washes for a couple of weeks, and my laundry is clean and no longer stiff with unrinsed detergent. It is easier to dry and iron as a result. I do use a stain remover if I have an obvious stain eg blood. I am not bombarded by artificial smells just clean, soft laundry. The washing machine is cleaner, first couple of uses I had to wipe away old detergent residue, now it doesn't smell either. Great!
