Handlesby Mrs Joan King

Lakeland 1 Litre Pudding Steamer

I totally agree with Mrs Hilson. Brilliant steamer - already have 2 litre but needed a smaller basin - the handles do spoil a first class steamer. I have to drag out the largest soup pot 14" diameter and even then I have difficulty lifting the basin out. What sort of cooking utensil did they test this steamer on?

A note from the team: Thanks for the review, I'll be sure to pass your comments about the handles to our buying team. We've found that the 1litre steamer fits nicely in a 24cm pan.

I love this steamer - it turns out perfect puds every time, however the locking mechanism is very very tricky and would work better with a screw type lid as it is easy to get off but horrendous to put on!!

Lakeland 1 Litre Pudding Steamer

Having read some of the other reviews before buying the steamer, I wanted to add some information that others might need before making a decision. Firstly, although I haven't actually used it yet, I was very impressed with it and the lid is fine - you do need to read the instructions, but when you have there isn't a problem, it's straight forward. Secondly, size. Unlike the picture, the handles on the basin I received were bent upwards. This meant it easily fitted into my stock pot, which is approximately 22cm wide. Hope this helps.

Don't regret it for a minute but......by Mrs Marsh

Lakeland 1 Litre Pudding Steamer

I have both versions of the pudding bowl and love them but apart from anything else the extra pan size needed to fit them in because the handles are in a fixed position means one is using twice as much energy to boil all that extra water. As pudding basins they are brilliant - that's why I've got two - but this is a real design fault and I don't understand why a company with the generations of great track record Lakeland has doesn't order a new version. If the handles folded upwards it would solve the problem and you'd be able to sell a 2 litre version again because bad reviews would go away

Lakeland 1 Litre Pudding Steamer

I used this product for the first time recently. It is fantastic takes all the tedium out of tieing strings around pudding bowls to avoid steam escaping. The pudding just slipped out perfectly cooked.. The only critiscm I would have is that maybe the steamer could do with folding handles. I usually cook three puddings together in the oven standing, covered in a roasting tray. With the width of the pot including the handles I could not do this, so it will take me three times as long to cook my three puddings. Otherwise it is a super product I love it!!

After use I washed by hand and all the tin colour film inside has peeled away. Also pudding didn't cook very well compared to a normal bowl covered with foil. Think I will go back to the old bowl method and bin this. Waste of money.

I wanted a sturdy steamer but when this came I just couldn't be bothered with the fiddly opening. It really IS tricky. I knew I would never use it so, sadly, returned it.

I must say I was rather disapointed in mine (I bought it in January 2011) after the 1st time I used it the outside coating of the pot bubbled. I used it again last week and the outside coating has started peeling off. I'm just hoping that it doesn't peel all the way to the top and then inside.

Is it just me?by Ms Southworth

Lakeland 1 Litre Pudding Steamer

or does this take longer to cook puddings than would be expected? I did christmas pudding which took twice as long as the recipe suggested and I've now had a treacle pudding on for 6 hours and it's still not cooked. It's a Delia recipe which should take 2 hours; the edges look ok but the middle is still liquid. Is it the recipe? Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions gratefully received (and recipes).

A note from the team: Thanks for placing your review.Sorry for the disappointment caused. I'll be in touch shortly to help.I'm not sure what's going wrong, perhaps more water is needed, or a bigger pan with a close fitting lid, or the steamer lid may not be on correctly. A trivet under the steamer to aid cooking may also help.

Lakeland 1 Litre Pudding Steamer

I had one Lakeland Pudding steamer which I filled with my Christmas Pudding mixture, an absolute dream. I had so much mixture left over I had to prepare them in the traditional way with bowls, greasproof, string etc - so time consuming and a lot of messing around. I was so fed up with them, I ordered another Lakeland 1 Litre pudding steamer as they are absolutely brilliant. I was able to feed the pudding with brandy every so often just by taking off the lid and then replacing it. I haven't even bothered feeding the others too much hassle. Well done Lakeland a brilliant product and so easy to turn out - looked very professional

This has functioned very well making 3 lovely xmas puddings yesterday however this morning before I went to wash it, some of the charcoal cover flaked off in quite a large piece leaving it looking quite naff. As it said it has functioned well but if I wanted to bring it to the table and unveil the pudding, I would be concerned as it looks cheap now. disappointed with it now as not sure how long it will last and Im sure as the cover has flaked, more will come off in time with use!

Phew! I have just eaten the first pud that I have cooked in my new pudding steamer. It was the best meat pudding I have ever made, apparently ALMOST up to mother-in-laws' standard! I read the reviews before I bought, and took in the comments, including measuring my pans, I used a stew pan. You MUST read the opening/closing instructions on the box. It is simple to open, but only if you read how to do it. The pudding slipped out perfectly, beautifully crisp & golden.

I used this once at Christmas for a Christmas Pudding. Today I have used it for a Steak and Kidney Pudding. The lid refuses to budge, we have tried so hard to get it to come out the ring on the lid has broken off. We now have just vegetables for tea and a pudding stuck in a time capsule never to be seen again.

Shame about the handlesby Beverley

Yes, I agree with the other reviews. I had to dig out an old stock pot as the handles prevented the basin from going in to the steamer. I was lucky to have one. Not sure what else I would have done otherwise. Neat item though.

The handles spoil itby Mrs Lorelei Hilson

Lakeland 1 Litre Pudding Steamer

I was delighted when my husband bought this for me for a birthday present as covering a Christmas pudding with greasproof paper and string etc for cooking is such a faff. It took a while to work out the system for opening and closing the basin but it worked a treat. Unfortunately, I encountered a big problem with the basin when I tried putting it into my steamer as the handles protruded too far and it wouldn't fit in. I solved it by digging out my huge stock pot but it was rather like using a sledge hammer to crack a nut and such a shame it hadn't been thought through in the designing. I must say that the non-stickness of the basin worked a treat and the pudding turned out like a dream. Perhaps folding handles (or none) would have saved my disappointment.

Lovely piece of equipment works well in my large cast iron casserole. Would like an even smaller one to suit just two people (single portions).

Good in partsby Mrs Lewis

Lakeland 1 Litre Pudding Steamer

This steamer does fit easily into my large 22cm steamer, and also my Tefal electric steamer, but as most of my pudding recipes call for a 2 pint (1.2 litre) pudding basin, it is a little small in capacity for my needs. I have an extensive library of recipe books, but I only found 1 recipe which called for a 1 litre basin! I did manage to steam my Delia Christmas Pudding (1.2l) in it this week but some of the mixture escaped, and this made the lid tricky to remove afterwards as it was gummed up with pudding. What would be ideal would be a 1.2 litre version with foldaway handles.

1 litre pudding steamer design faultby Mr david dawkins

Lakeland 1 Litre Pudding Steamer

Steams a fantastic pudding......once you have borrowed a pan big enough to place the basin in. Surely the "handles" could have been designed to be inserted into a standard UK, large domestic saucepan? Or do we now have to purchase a king size saucepan!

I was really pleased to see this in the new catalogue. The larger version, which has been available for some time, is too big for our needs; so I bought this smaller version as soon as it became available. It's really well made, and I was looking forward to using it. I did so today - only to find that the handles on the side made it too big, even for my large (standard 20cm) saucepan. I tried tilting it trusting that the locking lid would stop it leaking, but then I found the saucepan lid didn't fit. This part of the design really wasn't very well thought out at all. Maybe it should have folding handles, or one handle, or one folding handle, or offset handles, or handles that are angled down. Whatever the possible design solution, I'm disappointed. No one (including me!) thought about the fact that something 20cm overall wouldn't fit inside a 20cm saucepan. In the end I had the choice of digging my giant pasta pan out of the back of the cupboard, or getting out my grandmas old fashioned aluminium steamer. I went for the latter, as it would be less washing up, and I managed to wedge this by tilting it slightly on its side. This has a very shallow lid, so I could get the lid on. However, as I've had to get the steamer out, I might as well have used my china pudding basin. I'll see if my husband can remove one or both of the handles. It's a really lovely item, I hope that Lakeland will consider making some changes to it.
